She & Him pairs Zooey Deschanel's intimate vocals and keyboards with M. Ward's fingerpicked guitar work and production touch, creating a distinctive indie folk sound rooted in reverence for vintage records. This Portland-based project balances Deschanel's homemade bedroom compositions with Ward's arrangement sensibility, drawing from the folk-pop traditions they both admire.
About She & Him
The pair met in 2006 while recording a version of Richard and Linda Thompson's 'When I Get To The Border' for the film The Go-Getter. During early studio conversations about old records, Deschanel shared songs she had recorded alone at home on her computer. Though hesitant at first, she sent the demos to Ward, who was immediately impressed by what he heard. They reconvened at his Portland studio to develop these tracks into full arrangements.
With Deschanel juggling acting commitments and Ward handling touring obligations, the two recorded their debut album Volume One at an unhurried pace over several months, releasing it through Merge Records in March 2008. The approach proved sustainable: Volume Two arrived in March 2010, followed by Volume 3 in May 2013. The partnership reflects a collaborative dynamic where Deschanel's songwriting and vocal character drive the material while Ward shapes the instrumental landscape, preserving the charm of her original home recordings within fuller production.
