Ryan Adams is an alt-country and rock songwriter from Jacksonville, North Carolina who built his reputation in the 1990s with Whiskeytown before launching a prolific solo career marked by constant experimentation across multiple genres and formats.
About Ryan Adams
Adams dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue music, forming Whiskeytown in 1994 with his bandmates. The group became one of the leading voices in the alt-country scene of the late 1990s, releasing Faithless Street and Strangers Almanac before disbanding in 1999. Their third album Pneumonia finally surfaced in 2001 after a lengthy delay. Adams launched his solo career with Heartbreaker in 2000, which earned a Shortlist Music Prize nomination and established him as a distinctive voice beyond his former group.
What followed was an extraordinary output spanning multiple musical styles and collaborations. Between 2000 and 2008, Adams released numerous solo albums including Gold, Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, 29, Love Is Hell, and Rock N Roll, along with five albums as Ryan Adams & the Cardinals. His productivity extended beyond traditional releases, with countless out-takes, unreleased material, and side projects circulating. He collaborated with Jesse Malin on The Finger, a punk-rock venture released under the One Little Indian label. In 2009, Adams announced an indefinite hiatus related to struggles with Meniere's disease, but resumed performing in 2010 and released Ashes & Fire in 2011. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 3 editions of his work, including Suicide Handbook - Red, Self Portrait, and Heartbreaker 25th Anniversary.
