The duo's foundation traces back to 2012, when El-P produced Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music and Killer Mike appeared on El-P's Cancer 4 Cure track Tougher Colder Killer. Both albums received strong critical response and led to the Into The Wild tour that same year. Recognizing their creative chemistry, they decided to formalize their partnership as Run the Jewels, releasing their self-titled debut in June 2013 on Fool's Gold Records.

Run the Jewels 2 arrived in October 2014 through Mass Appeal Records, followed by remix editions including the cat-sounds-only Meow the Jewels. Run the Jewels 3 dropped digitally in December 2016 with a physical release in January 2017, gaining broader visibility when Legend Has It was featured in the Black Panther teaser during the 2017 NBA Finals and across the Baby Driver soundtrack. RTJ4 released in June 2020 and reached a Metacritic score of 89, arriving two days early in response to George Floyd protests.

The Groove Hunter currently tracks 4 editions of Run the Jewels releases, including Run the Jewels 2 and RTJ4 [2 LP], giving collectors multiple pressing options for building their collection.
