Born in Texas in 1936, Orbison started in country-and-western bands as a teenager before Sam Phillips signed him to Sun Records in 1956 on Johnny Cash's recommendation. His early work shared DNA with Elvis recordings, but Orbison quickly developed his own approach. The real breakthrough came after moving to Monument Records, where between 1960 and 1966 he placed 22 singles in the Billboard Top 40. He wrote or co-wrote nearly all of them: "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Oh, Pretty Woman" all built around dramatic instrumental arrangements and shifts in tempo that commercial radio had never quite heard before. His stage presence matched the music's intensity, performing with minimal movement in dark suits and sunglasses.
Orbison's commercial fortunes dimmed after the mid-1960s following personal tragedies, though studio work continued. A significant late-career revival arrived in the late 1980s, partly driven by other artists covering his material. In 1988, he joined the Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne, then released the album Mystery Girl shortly before his death in December that year. "You Got It", released posthumously in 1989, returned him to the top 10 in both the US and UK. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
