Roxette brought Swedish pop-rock to global radio in the late 1980s, with Marie Fredriksson's distinctive vocal presence paired against Per Gessle's songwriting. Their commercial peak arrived fast and sustained across two decades, making them one of Europe's consistently certified acts.
About Roxette
The partnership started when Gessle, already established as frontman of the Swedish group Gyllene Tider, connected with solo artist Fredriksson at the suggestion of EMI executive Rolf Nygren. Their debut Pearls of Passion arrived in 1986, but the real breakthrough came with Look Sharp! in 1988, which produced two Billboard Hot 100 number-ones in The Look and Listen to Your Heart. The soundtrack placement of It Must Have Been Love from Pretty Woman cemented their crossover status, reaching number one in North America and establishing Roxette as a major international act.
Their third album Joyride in 1991 became their peak commercial statement, moving eleven million units worldwide and spawning the title track to number one. The Join the Joyride! Tour reached over 1.5 million attendees. Tourism, Crash! Boom! Bang!, and the compilation Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus each cleared five million in global sales. After Fredriksson's 1998 brain tumor diagnosis and subsequent health struggles forced a hiatus, Roxette returned in 2009 for seven years of touring and three albums: Charm School, Travelling, and Good Karma. Fredriksson's death in December 2019 marked the end of the duo; Gessle has since performed under the PG Roxette banner and announced a 2024 tour as Roxette featuring vocalist Lena Philipsson. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions across titles including Look Sharp, Joyride: 30th Anniversary Deluxe, and Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus.
