Formed in 2013 from a college dorm room project, RKS blends influences from Modest Mouse, Lana Del Rey, and Kings of Leon into their own distinctive sound.
About Rainbow Kitten Surprise
The band started in early 2013 when Ela Melo and Darrick Keller began writing and composing together as acoustic guitarists at Appalachian State University. Their debut EP Mary was recorded in a dorm room and laid the foundation for what would become a full ensemble. Within a year, they expanded by adding Ethan Goodpaster on electric guitar, Jess Haney on drums, and Charlie Holt on bass, creating the five-member lineup that defined their sound.
RKS independently released their first album Seven, which was later reissued as a combined package with Mary under the title Seven + Mary. The title track Seven gained attention through podcast placements like IGN's Podcast Beyond, while Devil Like Me and its music video earned the band a spot in VH1's Make A Band Famous contest, advancing them to the final 24 out of thousands of competitors. The group continues to focus on producing fresh, quality music with both melodic appeal and substance.
