Rage Against the Machine brought rap-metal fusion and explicit political messaging to mainstream rock when they formed in Los Angeles in 1991. Zack de la Rocha's vocal intensity paired with Tom Morello's guitar work created a sound that cut across heavy metal, punk, funk, and hip-hop without settling into any single lane.

The band's 1992 self-titled debut established their template: dense, funky rhythms from Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk anchoring verses that swung between sung and rapped delivery, all wrapped around Morello's heavily processed, conversational guitar tone. They built momentum through festival appearances like 1993 Lollapalooza and solidified chart dominance with Evil Empire in 1996 and The Battle of Los Angeles in 1999, both reaching number one on the Billboard 200. Their final studio album before the first split, Renegades in 2000, shifted focus to cover material from artists like Minor Threat and Marvin Gaye.
After disbanding in 2000, they reunited for Coachella in 2007 and toured periodically until 2011, then announced another world tour in 2019 that was postponed due to the pandemic and cut short by de la Rocha's leg injury. Brad Wilk confirmed in 2024 that the band had disbanded for a third time. The group moved 16 million records worldwide and received induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, cementing their influence on the nu metal era and hard rock more broadly.
