The band's foundation came together when Peter Buck and Michael Stipe met at a record store in Athens, quickly joined by drummer Bill Berry and bassist Mike Mills. Their early independent releases, starting with the single Radio Free Europe in 1981 and the EP Chronic Town in 1982, attracted college radio attention and built a devoted regional following. The I.R.S. Records era delivered Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables of the Reconstruction, establishing their reputation for literate songwriting and Buck's distinctive guitar approach.

Moving to Warner Bros. in 1988 with the album Green marked the beginning of their commercial ascendancy. The early 1990s brought their peak commercial period with Out Of Time in 1991, which produced Losing My Religion, their highest-charting single, followed by Automatic For The People in 1992 featuring Drive, Man on the Moon, and Everybody Hurts. Monster in 1994 continued their commercial momentum, while New Adventures in Hi-Fi in 1996 was recorded during extensive touring. Bill Berry's departure in 1997 shifted the band to a trio format, leading them to explore varied directions on albums like Up, Reveal, Around the Sun, Accelerate, and Collapse into Now.

The band received Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007 and disbanded on September 21, 2011, with all members in agreement.
