Queen's early direction drew from progressive rock and hard rock, but the band found their commercial stride with A Night at the Opera in 1975. That album's centerpiece, Bohemian Rhapsody, became a nine-week UK chart-topper and marked a turning point in how rock bands approached studio production and visual presentation. News of the World followed in 1977 with We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, songs that transcended their original context to become permanent fixtures in sports culture and public consciousness.

By the early 1980s, Queen had secured their position as one of the largest stadium acts in rock. The Game in 1980 produced Another One Bites the Dust, which became their best-selling single, while the 1981 compilation Greatest Hits achieved extraordinary longevity, earning 9x Platinum certification in the US and becoming the best-selling album in UK chart history. Mercury's final performance occurred at Knebworth in August 1986, though the band continued recording until 1991. Following Mercury's death in November 1991, a posthumous album, Made in Heaven, appeared in 1995 using previously recorded vocal material.
