About Placebo

The band coalesced around vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal, with drummer Robert Schultzberg completing the initial lineup in late 1994. Schultzberg departed shortly after their eponymous 1996 debut, replaced by Steve Hewitt the same year. Molko was born in Belgium while both Olsdal and Schultzberg hailed from Sweden, though Molko and Olsdal grew up together in Luxembourg before moving to London separately. The 1997 single "Nancy Boy" became the breakthrough moment, its frank gender-bending content earning notoriety at a time when such openness stood apart from mainstream rock radio.

Placebo maintained a stable core with Hewitt through the late 1990s and 2000s, releasing a succession of albums that consistently charted in the UK Top 20. Hewitt left in 2007 due to personal and musical differences, and Steve Forrest took over behind the kit in 2008, appearing on two further studio albums before departing in 2015. The band has since operated as a duo, working with additional musicians on recordings and live dates. Their collaborations span from David Bowie and Michael Stipe to Justin Warfield and Alison Mosshart, positioning them as thoughtful curators of artistic partnerships rather than conventional rock acts.
