Harvey began her recording life in 1988 with Automatic Dlamini, a local band where she worked as vocalist, guitarist, and saxophonist alongside John Parish, who would become a frequent creative partner. In 1991, she formed the trio PJ Harvey and released two influential albums: Dry (1992) and Rid of Me (1993), which displayed her angular guitar work and intense vocal delivery. After the trio disbanded, she transitioned to solo recording and has released ten additional studio albums since 1995, collaborating with musicians like Mick Harvey, Rob Ellis, and producer Flood.

Harvey's accolades reflect her sustained artistic impact. She won the Mercury Prize twice, for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000) and Let England Shake (2011), becoming the only artist to achieve this. Her nominations include eight Brit Awards, eight Grammy Awards, two additional Mercury Prizes, and a BAFTA nomination. In 1992, Rolling Stone named her Best New Artist and Best Singer-Songwriter; she received Artist of the Year honors in 1995 and the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the NME Awards. In 2013, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music.
