Pixies emerged from Boston in 1986 with a jarring sound that combined punk aggression and surf rock textures into something wholly their own. Their dynamic loud-quiet-loud arrangements and Black Francis' surreal lyrics influenced major acts like Nirvana and Radiohead, despite modest US sales during their initial 1987-1991 run.

The band's core strength was their structural approach to songwriting. Francis paired oblique, often disturbing lyrical themes with instrumental passages that shifted abruptly between whisper-quiet verses and explosive choruses, a formula that felt fresh against the hairspray rock of the late 1980s. Their five studio albums came out in rapid succession: Come On Pilgrim as a 1987 mini-album, followed by the fuller statements of Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde across the next four years. Kim Deal's bass work and vocal contributions gave their sound texture and an additional compositional voice, while Joey Santiago's lead guitar work ranged from angular and trebly to surf-rock melodic depending on the track.
After dissolving in 1993, Pixies reunited in 2004 and have remained active since, though with significant lineup changes. Deal departed in 2012 and was succeeded first by Kim Shattuck, then by Paz Lenchantin, who stayed through three full albums: Head Carrier, Beneath the Eyrie, and Doggerel. The band continues recording with new bassist Emma Richardson.
