André Benjamin and Antwan Patton met at Tri-Cities High School in Atlanta and caught the attention of Organized Noize, the producer collective behind TLC's early hits. Signed to LaFace Records in 1992 as the label's first hip-hop act, OutKast released their debut single 'Player's Ball' in 1993, a funk-heavy track built on live instrumentation that topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. Their April 1994 debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, entirely produced by Organized Noize, is credited with establishing the foundation for Southern hip-hop and remains a touchstone for collectors seeking that era's sound.
ATLiens arrived in August 1996 with increased musicality and regional crossover appeal, while Aquemini in September 1998 reached number two on the Billboard 200 and earned a rare five-mic rating from The Source magazine. For these later albums, OutKast co-founded production company Earthtone III with David Sheats, giving them control over their own arrangements and allowing them to explore soul, trip-hop, and electro influences alongside contributions from George Clinton and other collaborators. The group maintained commercial momentum through Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, one of only four hip-hop albums certified Diamond in the US for shipping over 10 million units.
