The band's foundation was laid by founder David Isberg, though Mikael Åkerfeldt took over as lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter in 1992 and has steered the project ever since. Opeth's early material, starting with Orchid in 1995, leaned heavily into their death metal roots while introducing the dynamic contrasts that would become their signature. The lineup has rotated completely from the original members, but the compositional vision has remained distinctly Åkerfeldt's.
Their breakthrough came with Blackwater Park in 2001, which prompted the band to shift from rare live dates to extensive world touring. Ghost Reveries in 2005 marked their entry into the charts across multiple territories, followed by Watershed in 2008 hitting number one in Finland and climbing to 23 on the US Billboard 200. These albums established Opeth as serious players in progressive metal, with their catalog moving over 1.5 million units worldwide by 2009. Their fourteenth studio album, The Last Will and Testament, released in 2024, won the Swedish Grammis award for Best Hard Rock/Metal.
