The band formed around Ryan Tedder's songwriting and vocal presence, with a full ensemble built around guitar, strings, and rhythm section that gives their arrangements a live-band quality often absent in studio pop-rock. Their breakthrough came via an independent Myspace release of Apologize in 2006, which caught enough attention to land them a Columbia Records deal. After that initial label support fell through, the group rebuilt their momentum and released Dreaming Out Loud in 2007, a record that established their template of radio-friendly hooks layered over guitar and orchestral elements.

The band sustained momentum through the 2010s with Waking Up, Native, and Oh My My, each cycling through different production collaborators while maintaining Tedder's core songwriting voice. Native produced Counting Stars, a global chart success that confirmed their ability to scale beyond English-speaking markets. More recently, their output has expanded into film and television work, with placements on Top Gun: Maverick, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and various anime projects, a strategy that keeps their name in circulation across visual media.

Their catalog spans pop, rock, and alternative territories, with influences ranging from classical composers through the Beatles and U2 to more contemporary electronic-leaning artists like M83. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 6 editions of OneRepublic releases, including Waking Up, Native Expanded Edition, and Artificial Paradise on Gold LP, offering collectors multiple entry points into their discography across different vinyl formats and configurations.
