Christopher Wallace grew up in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and began rapping after his release from jail in the early 1990s. A demo tape featuring his work caught the attention of Sean Combs at Uptown Records, launching a partnership that would define his career. Guest appearances on tracks with Mary J. Blige, 2Pac, and others built momentum leading to his solo breakthrough.
Wallace released Ready to Die in 1994 to immediate critical acclaim. The album revitalized East Coast hip-hop with its storytelling depth and sharp lyricism, tracks like Everyday Struggle showing his ability to articulate real struggles through complex wordplay. His 1995 single One More Chance became a massive hit, debuting at number five on the pop charts and going Platinum within weeks. By year's end he was named Lyricist of the Year by The Source and widely recognized as the King of New York.
