About Nine Inch Nails
Reznor started Nine Inch Nails as a solo endeavor under TVT Records with Pretty Hate Machine in 1989, then moved to Interscope for the punishing EP Broken in 1992. The Downward Spiral and The Fragile became the project's definitive statements, combining digital production with heavy guitar work and establishing a distinctive visual identity through packaging designed by Gary Talpas. Reznor's refusal to call his own work industrial despite the label stuck; he drew from Throbbing Gristle, Test Dept, and Skinny Puppy but created something distinct that pulled alternative rock audiences into electronic experimentation.
After leaving Interscope in 2007, Reznor expanded Nine Inch Nails into a prolific independent operation, releasing Ghosts I-IV, The Slip, Hesitation Marks, and the Not the Actual Events/Add Violence/Bad Witch trilogy. The live band became a separate entity with shifting lineups, known for rearranged versions of songs and elaborate visual productions. Nine Inch Nails' cultural footprint includes Grammy wins, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2020, and over 20 million records sold.
