Cave emerged from rural Victoria in the late 1970s fronting The Birthday Party, a Melbourne post-punk outfit that relocated to London and developed a reputation for confrontational, violent live performances. The band's dissolution in 1983 led directly to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, which has remained his primary vehicle since. His early work drew heavily on American spirituals and Delta blues filtered through Old Testament imagery, establishing a template that shaped alternative rock's relationship with myth and mortality.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cave's output became increasingly varied. He moved from the mythic Deep South settings of his earliest Bad Seeds records toward more intimate, piano-driven material that unexpectedly crossed into mainstream success with the Kylie Minogue duet "Where the Wild Roses Grow" in 1996 and the solo ballad "Into My Arms" the following year. His recent work, including Ghosteen in 2019, has shifted toward abstract language and ambient textures while retaining his distinctive vocal presence. Beyond music, Cave has written screenplays for John Hillcoat's The Proposition and composed scores for films including Hell or High Water, collaborated extensively with Warren Ellis, and published two novels.
