Modern Baseball is a four-piece emo band from Brunswick, Maryland who relocated to Philadelphia and became central figures in the 2010s emo revival. Their basement-show origins and DIY recording ethic shaped a sound rooted in the emotional intensity of the genre, with lyrics examining relationships, coming-of-age moments, and personal struggle.
About Modern Baseball
Bren Lukens and Jake Ewald formed Modern Baseball after discovering a book titled "Modern Baseball Techniques" in Jake's basement, a chance encounter that would define both their band name and visual identity. The two had bonded over shared musical interests after attending a show together in 2010, and by 2011 they self-released their first EP, "The Nameless Ranger." When they moved to Philadelphia for college, they tapped into a vibrant underground punk and emo scene, recruiting drummer Sean Huber and bassist Ian Farmer to complete the lineup. Their 2012 debut album "Sports" caught the attention of listeners across the emerging fourth-wave emo revival, leading to collaborations and splits with bands like Marietta, Old Gray, and The Hundred Acre Woods.
Modern Baseball signed to Run for Cover Records and released their second album "You're Gonna Miss It All" in February 2014, which peaked at number 97 on the Billboard 200 and introduced a more refined production approach while maintaining the band's emotional core. The album's success generated substantial pre-order support, with Bren famously following through on a promise to shave the avatar arrow into their head. The band toured extensively across the US and Europe, sharing bills with The Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck, Foxing, and other scene-adjacent acts. By October 2015, they released their second EP "Mobo Presents: The Perfect Cast EP Featuring Modern Baseball," which signaled a deliberate shift in their sonic direction and compositional approach.
The Groove Hunter currently tracks 4 editions of Modern Baseball vinyl, including Sports in Lime Green, You're Gonna Miss It All in Olive Green, a standard pressing of You're Gonna Miss It All, and Mobo Presents The Perfect Cast EP in Exclusive White In Clear with Pink and Blue Splatter.
