Mitski is an American singer-songwriter who emerged from the indie rock underground with guitar-driven compositions and has evolved into one of the more distinctive pop voices of the 2020s. Her catalog spans from self-released early work through critically acclaimed albums on Double Double Whammy and Dead Oceans, marked by precise arrangements and intense emotional directness.
About Mitski
Born in Japan to an American diplomat and Japanese mother, Mitski grew up across multiple continents including Turkey, China, Malaysia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo before settling in the United States. She began writing music at 18 while living in Ankara and eventually studied composition at SUNY Purchase College, where she self-released her first two albums, Lush and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, while developing a long-term production partnership with Patrick Hyland. Her third album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek, marked a stylistic shift toward guitar-driven arrangements and caught the attention of critics, establishing her as an artist worth following beyond the college radio circuit.
After signing with Dead Oceans, Mitski released Puberty 2 in 2016, which solidified her reputation for combining melodic pop sensibility with art-rock restraint. Be the Cowboy arrived in 2018 to widespread critical praise, with its track Nobody gaining significant traction through social media years after release. From this period onward, she integrated choreographed stage movement influenced by Butoh into her live performances, treating concerts as complete artistic statements. She took a touring hiatus in 2019 to reassess her relationship with the industry, but returned to recording with Laurel Hell in 2022, followed by The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We in 2023, which earned her a Billboard Hot 100 entry with My Love Mine All Mine and an Academy Award nomination for her collaborative work on Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Mitski released her eighth studio album, Nothing's About to Happen to Me, in February 2026, continuing her pattern of consistent output despite her earlier doubts about continuing in music. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 6 editions of her vinyl releases, including Nothing's About to Happen to Me, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, and multiple variants of Puberty 2 across different pressings and formats.
