Miki Matsubara was a Japanese singer, composer, and keyboardist whose career spanned from 1979 through 2000, leaving behind a catalog that blends city pop sensibilities with jazz and anime soundtrack work. Her debut hit 'Mayonaka no Door (Stay with Me)' became a standard that other artists would revisit, while her compositions and performances shaped the sound of 80s and 90s Japanese commercial music.

Born in Osaka in 1959, Matsubara grew up in a musical household, with her mother performing as a jazz singer. She began piano at three and gravitated toward rock and keyboard work in her teens before moving to Tokyo at seventeen to pursue her singing ambitions. The pianist Yuzuru Sera discovered her performing in live venues across the Kanto region, setting the stage for her 1979 debut. Her immediate breakthrough came with 'Mayonaka no Door (Stay with Me)', which reached 28th on the Oricon Chart and sold over 100,000 copies. The follow-up 'Neat na gogo san-ji' solidified her position as a working vocalist, earning her a Shiseido commercial placement within two years of her debut.
Matsubara's voice, a mezzo-soprano range, carried her through 8 singles and 12 albums of distinctive material that combined pop sensibilities with jazz and soft rock influences. Beyond her own releases, she became deeply involved in anime soundtracks, composing opening and closing themes for series including Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Dirty Pair: Project Eden. She also worked extensively as a composer for other artists, most notably penning multiple songs for singer and actress Mariko Kouda. Her international experience included backing vocals and composition work with the Motown jazz fusion group Dr. Strut in Los Angeles, and she formed her own band, Dr. Woo. In 2001, after withdrawing from public life at the end of 2000 due to illness, it was revealed that Matsubara had received a late-stage cancer diagnosis. She died in October 2004 at age 44.
