MF DOOM was a British-American rapper who built one of underground hip hop's most distinctive careers behind a metal mask and intricate internal rhymes. His output across multiple aliases and collaborative projects between 1999 and his death in 2020 made him a defining figure for collectors interested in alternative hip hop.
About Mf Doom
Daniel Dumile was born in London in 1971 and raised in Long Beach, New York. He started recording in 1988 as Zev Love X with the group KMD, a partnership that ended in 1993 after the death of his brother and bandmate DJ Subroc. After several years away, Dumile reemerged in the late 1990s performing at open mics while wearing a metal mask inspired by Marvel's Doctor Doom, a visual identity that became permanent and integral to his artistic brand.
His 1999 solo debut Operation: Doomsday announced the MF DOOM character to wider audiences and launched a prolific run through the early 2000s. Working under multiple aliases, he released Mm..Food and collaborated with producer Madlib on Madvillainy in 2004, followed by Danger Mouse on The Mouse and the Mask in 2005. Though based in America for most of his life, Dumile never obtained citizenship and was denied reentry to the country in 2010 after an international tour. He relocated to the UK, first to London then Leeds, where his later work focused on collaborative albums with producers and rappers including Jneiro Jarel, Bishop Nehru, and Czarface.
Dumile died on October 31, 2020, in Leeds from angioedema caused by a reaction to blood pressure medication. His influence on underground and alternative hip hop remains substantial among collectors and producers.
