About Mazzy Star
The band emerged from the dissolution of Opal when Kendra Smith departed and Hope Sandoval joined Roback to reshape the project's direction. Their emergence coincided with the early 1990s alternative boom, though Mazzy Star carved out space through restraint rather than bombast. The 1993 debut She Hangs Brightly introduced their signature blend of country-influenced melancholy and indie rock textures, establishing a template that would define their sound across subsequent releases.
The mid-1990s brought mainstream attention when "Fade Into You" from their second album So Tonight That I Might See achieved substantial radio and MTV rotation, becoming their most recognizable track. Despite this commercial moment, the band maintained their understated aesthetic and continued recording through the 2000s and beyond. Roback and Sandoval remained the creative nucleus until Roback's death in February 2020, with the band's final studio work, Seasons of Your Day, arriving in 2013 followed by the EP Still in 2018.
