About Matchbox Twenty
The band coalesced around Rob Thomas, whose songwriting and vocal delivery became their signature element. Thomas, Paul Doucette, and Brian Yale had performed together in Tabitha's Secret before recruiting Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor to form Matchbox Twenty. Their 1996 debut Yourself or Someone Like You sold over 12 million copies domestically and established their live reputation through years of relentless touring. That same year, Thomas co-wrote and performed on Carlos Santana's Smooth, a crossover hit that earned him three Grammys and raised his profile considerably.
After the Santana collaboration, Matchbox Twenty returned with Mad Season in 2000, featuring more elaborate arrangements and the hit Bent, which reached Number One on the Hot 100. A harder rock direction followed on their third album More Than You Think You Are, with Thomas expanding songwriting duties across the band. The group entered a hiatus period in the mid-2000s as members pursued side projects, including Thomas's solo album ...Something To Be. Exile On Mainstream arrived in 2007 as a two-disc set mixing new material with a greatest hits compilation, before their fourth studio album of new material, North, came in 2012 after a ten-year gap.
