Mastodon is a heavy metal band from Atlanta that emerged in 2000 with a sound rooted in progressive and sludge metal. Their catalog spans eight studio albums marked by conceptual ambition, Grammy recognition, and distinctive vocal arrangements across multiple band members.
About Mastodon
The band formed with Troy Sanders on bass and vocals, Brent Hinds on lead guitar and vocals, Bill Kelliher on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, and Brann Dailor on drums and vocals. Their 2002 debut Remission announced a distinctive approach to heavy metal, while Leviathan in 2004 built a concept album around Moby-Dick and earned Album of the Year honors from Revolver, Kerrang!, and Terrorizer. Blood Mountain followed in 2006 with the Grammy-nominated track Colony of Birchmen, establishing the band's ability to compete at the highest levels of metal recognition.
Their catalog deepened with Crack the Skye in 2009 and The Hunter in 2011, the latter reaching number 10 on the Billboard 200 and featuring Curl of the Burl. Once More 'Round the Sun peaked at number six in 2014, while Emperor of Sand in 2017 marked a commercial high point with Show Yourself reaching number four on the Mainstream Rock chart and Sultan's Curse earning the band their first Grammy win. Hushed and Grim arrived in 2021 before Brent Hinds departed in March 2025. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 12 editions across Mastodon releases, including multiple variants of Leviathan, Emperor of Sand, Crack the Skye, and The Hunter.
