Massive Attack are the Bristol collective who essentially defined trip hop with their 1991 debut Blue Lines. Formed in 1988 by 3D, Daddy G, Tricky, and Mushroom, Massive Attack arrived at a moment when electronic music was fragmenting into countless subgenres. Blue Lines didn't invent trip hop, but it codified what collectors now expect from the sound: orchestral arrangements colliding with breakbeats, soul vocals floating over dub basslines. The album's commercial anchor, "Unfinished Sympathy", proved the sound could chart internationally, hitting number one in the Netherlands and establishing the group's signature approach to guest vocals. Tricky departed after 1994's Protection to build his own solo reputation, leaving the core partnership of 3D and Daddy G.
Mezzanine (1998) represented their artistic peak and commercial breakthrough, becoming their first UK number one and landing both it and Blue Lines on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums. The album's production is relentlessly dark and textured, with "Teardrop" later becoming the opening theme for the American television series House, exposing their work to mainstream audiences. Mushroom exited in 1999, and 3D and Daddy G continued as a duo through 100th Window (2003) and Heligoland (2010). Their collaborators across the catalog include Horace Andy, Tracey Thorn, Elizabeth Fraser, Sinéad O'Connor, and Damon Albarn, each bringing distinct vocal character to the instrumental foundation. Their five studio albums have sold over 13 million copies worldwide.
