The band's origins trace back to 1994 when Levine, Carmichael, Madden, and Dusick formed Kara's Flowers in high school. After releasing The Fourth World on Reprise Records in 1997, the group disbanded while members attended college. Their time apart proved influential when Levine and Carmichael moved east and absorbed the hip-hop and urban sounds of New York, which would shape their songwriting approach.
Maroon 5 reformed in 2001 with guitarist James Valentine joining the lineup and Carmichael switching to keyboards. Under the new name, they signed with Octone Records and released Songs About Jane in June 2002. The album's lead single Harder to Breathe drove significant radio play, helping the record reach number six on the Billboard 200 and earning the band a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005. Subsequent releases It Won't Be Soon Before Long and Hands All Over pushed their commercial reach further, with the Christina Aguilera collaboration Moves Like Jagger becoming a major crossover hit in 2010. Later albums Overexposed and V continued their chart success, establishing the band as reliable hitmakers across the 2010s.
