Tomlinson entered the music industry through television before auditioning for The X Factor in 2010. After elimination as a solo performer, he was grouped with four other contestants to form One Direction, which became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. When the group went on hiatus in 2016, he launched his solo career with "Just Hold On" in December that year, a UK number two single that earned platinum certification.

His early solo singles included "Back to You" featuring Bebe Rexha and "Miss You", both released in 2017. That same year he appeared on Debrett's list of the most influential people in the UK. In 2018, Tomlinson returned to The X Factor as a judge and mentor for the "Boys" category, and his mentee Dalton Harris won the competition, making Tomlinson the first former contestant of the show to mentor the winning act. His debut solo album Walls arrived in January 2020.
