Led Zeppelin emerged from London in 1968 as a four-piece unit that fused blues, folk, and heavy rock into a template that would define hard rock and heavy metal for decades. About Led Zeppelin
The band coalesced from Page's work with the Yardbirds and initially performed as the New Yardbirds before signing to Atlantic Records, where they gained the creative freedom to develop their sound. Their debut Led Zeppelin arrived in 1969 with raw tracks like Good Times Bad Times and Dazed and Confused, followed immediately by Led Zeppelin II that same year, which topped charts and introduced Whole Lotta Love to the world. Through the 1970s they refined their approach across releases including Led Zeppelin III with its distinctive Immigrant Song, the untitled fourth album commonly called Led Zeppelin IV that became one of the best-selling records ever made and contained Stairway to Heaven, Houses of the Holy, the sprawling two-record Physical Graffiti with Kashmir and Trampled Under Foot, Presence, and In Through the Out Door.
Page composed the bulk of the material while Plant handled most lyrics, with Jones contributing increasingly sophisticated keyboard arrangements as their later work matured. The second half of their career saw record-breaking tours paired with a reputation for excess, though their commercial dominance continued even as activity slowed toward decade's end. John Bonham's death in 1980 led the remaining members to disband, though they reunited for occasional performances including a 2007 tribute concert.
