About Laufey
Born in Reykjavik in 1999 to an Icelandic finance executive and a classical violinist from China, Laufey's musical foundation came early. She began piano at four and cello at eight, studying at the Reykjavik College of Music before earning a presidential scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated in 2021. Her multilingual upbringing spanning Iceland, Washington D.C., and Beijing shaped her approach to arrangement and cross-cultural musical sensibility.
Laufey's recorded output accelerated after her 2021 debut EP Typical of Me, which earned attention for her jazz standard interpretations posted to TikTok and described by The New York Times as casually elegant. Her debut album Everything I Know About Love arrived in 2022 on the independent label AWAL, reaching number one on Billboard's Alternative New Artist Album chart. The follow-up Bewitched (2023) won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Grammy Awards, establishing her as a serious voice in contemporary traditional pop. She released A Matter of Time in August 2025, which won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 68th Grammy Awards. A reissue titled Bewitched: The Goddess Edition came in March 2024, and she has continued building her catalog with holiday releases and compilation editions.
