About Kiss
Kiss started as a response to Wicked Lester's shelved debut. When that project stalled in 1972, Simmons and Stanley rebuilt from scratch, recruiting Peter Criss on drums and Ace Frehley on lead guitar by early 1973. Each member adopted a stage character: Stanley as the Starchild, Simmons as the Demon, Frehley as the Spaceman, Criss as the Catman. Their self-titled debut arrived on Casablanca Records in 1974 to modest commercial returns, but the group's reputation for live intensity grew through constant touring. The turning point came with the 1975 live album Alive!, which went gold and delivered a hit single version of Rock and Roll All Nite. That momentum carried through a string of successful studio releases including Destroyer, Rock And Roll Over, and Love Gun, while the band expanded into merchandising, solo albums, and film appearances.
The late 1970s brought internal fractures. Criss exited in 1979, followed by Frehley in 1982. Kiss responded to declining commercial fortunes by abandoning makeup entirely in 1983, launching an unmasked era with Lick It Up that briefly recharged their appeal among younger listeners. But roster instability persisted through the 1980s until the classic lineup reunited in 1996, resuming makeup for a hugely profitable reunion tour. The band continued in various configurations until closing out with a final concert in December 2023. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 10 editions across titles including Animalize, Lick It Up, Rock And Roll Over, KISSWORLD - The Best Of KISS, Dynasty, Alive III, Love Gun on Tangerine/Aqua Splatter LP, and Alive II.
