Scott Mescudi grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, drawing inspiration from alternative hip hop acts like The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest before relocating to Brooklyn to pursue music. In 2008, he released his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi through a collaboration with New York streetwear brand 10.Deep, which generated enough momentum to catch Kanye West's attention and land him on West's 808s & Heartbreak. His appearance on Welcome to Heartbreak and contributions to Heartless positioned him as an emerging artist heading into 2009.
Cudi's debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day arrived in September 2009 and achieved Gold certification, followed by Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager in 2010. He continued releasing studio material through Indicud in 2013 and Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon in 2014, while maintaining his work with WZRD. Throughout this period, he made appearances on tracks by Kevin Rudolf and 88-Keys, and contributed to video game soundtracks including Midnight Club: Los Angeles and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.
