Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara in 1984, Perry grew up in a Christian environment and began her music career as a gospel artist. She released her debut album as Katy Hudson in 2001 on Red Hill Records, but the project failed commercially. After relocating to Los Angeles and working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin, she adopted her stage name and eventually landed at Capitol Records in April 2007.
Perry broke through in 2008 with One of the Boys, a pop-rock album featuring the U.S. number-one single "I Kissed a Girl" alongside "Hot n Cold."
