About Katatonia
The band's first two albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), established their roots in death/doom territory. Renkse's vocal strain redirected the band's approach on Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), moving toward melody and texture rather than pure aggression. By 2001, with Last Fair Deal Gone Down, a stable five-piece lineup solidified their sound into something more deliberate and layered, blending metal structures with progressive and alternative rock sensibilities.
The 2000s and early 2010s saw Katatonia refine this hybrid approach across Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006), Night Is the New Day (2009), and Dead End Kings (2012). These records show the band comfortable with space, dynamics, and introspective lyrics rather than velocity. The Fall of Hearts (2016) continued this trajectory before a semi-hiatus in 2018. Renkse and Nyström returned with City Burials (2020), followed by Sky Void of Stars (2023) and the recent Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State (2025).
