Born Kanye Omari West in 1977, he entered music as an in-house producer at Roc-A-Fella Records, co-producing Jay-Z's The Blueprint before signing as a recording artist himself. The College Dropout arrived in 2004 to critical praise and spawned the number-one single Slow Jamz, establishing his approach of layered soul samples and introspective storytelling. Late Registration and Graduation both debuted at the Billboard 200 top, with Graduation becoming his most commercially successful album to that point.

West's catalog took sharper turns with 808s & Heartbreak, which introduced auto-tuned vocals and minimal production, followed by the dense, maximalist My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the stripped-down industrial textures of Yeezus.
