JPEGMAFIA is an experimental hip-hop artist and producer from Brooklyn whose abrasive, noise-informed production style emerged from the Baltimore DIY scene before relocating to Los Angeles. His work blends trap, R&B, and industrial elements into densely layered compositions that prioritize sonic texture and lyrical directness over commercial appeal.
About Jpegmafia
Barrington Hendricks grew up between Brooklyn, Alabama, and Louisiana before enlisting in the Air Force at 18, serving tours in Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, Japan, and North Africa. After discharge, he spent time producing in Japan under the name Devon Hendryx before settling in Baltimore in 2015, where he adopted the JPEGMAFIA moniker and released Communist Slow Jams and Darkskin Manson. His 2016 debut Black Ben Carson introduced the harsh, distorted production that would define his sonic identity, and Veteran (2018) expanded that palette while maintaining its abrasive character.
All My Heroes Are Cornballs (2019) marked a commercial breakthrough, becoming his first charting album while sustaining the experimental approach he'd developed. The record featured contributions from Denzel Curry and others, promoted through listening session videos on YouTube that brought visibility to his work. Following a series of singles compiled into EP! and EP2!, he released LP! in October 2021, and announced plans for multiple album releases in 2023 alongside a collaborative project with Danny Brown.
Hendricks cites Kanye West as his primary influence alongside Ol' Dirty Bastard, MF DOOM, and Throbbing Gristle, among artists across hip-hop, rock, and electronic music. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 4 editions across titles including All My Heroes Are Cornballs, Scaring The Hoes - White, and I Lay Down My Life For You - White.
