Born in 1932 in New York to a jazz percussionist father, Williams studied composition and conducting at various institutions before securing his breakthrough work in film scoring during the 1970s. His partnership with director Steven Spielberg, beginning in 1974, produced some of the most performed film scores in history. Williams has accumulated 24 Grammy Awards, five Academy Awards, and 51 Oscar nominations, making him the second most-nominated individual in Academy history after Walt Disney. The American Film Institute recognized his Star Wars score as the greatest American film score of all time, and the Library of Congress preserved it in the National Recording Registry for its cultural and historical significance.

Beyond film work, Williams conducted the Boston Pops from 1980 to 1993 and maintains his role as laureate conductor there. He has also composed concertos and orchestral works for classical ensembles, collaborating with performers across multiple genres.
