Jamiroquai started on Acid Jazz Records before Sony picked them up, launching a commercial trajectory that saw multiple UK number-one albums. Their early work, particularly the 1993 debut Emergency on Planet Earth, positioned them as leaders of the acid jazz movement, but they quickly broadened their sound to absorb rock, disco, electronic production, and Latin textures. The band's lyrics consistently addressed social and environmental concerns, giving their grooves substance beyond the dancefloor.
Their third album, Travelling Without Moving (1996), became a watershed moment. Guinness World Records certified it the best-selling funk album in history, and the single Virtual Insanity delivered a worldwide hit through its innovative music video, which won MTV Video of the Year in 1997 and a Grammy the following year. That momentum carried through subsequent releases like Synkronized (1999) and A Funk Odyssey (2001), both reaching number one in the UK.
