About Incubus
Formed in 1991, Incubus built their early reputation through West Coast alternative rock that blended rap-metal elements with guitar-driven arrangements. Brandon Boyd's vocal presence and Mike Einziger's layered guitar work became the band's core identity, while the rhythmic foundation came from drummer Jose Pasillas II and rotating bass players. The project stabilized as a five-piece with the addition of DJ Chris Kilmore, adding production textures that separated them from their contemporaries. The band chose their name from a dictionary selection by Einziger shortly before their first show, with no particular conceptual weight behind it despite the mythological reference.
Breakthrough arrived with Make Yourself in 1999, which secured their transition from cult appeal to radio presence. The follow-up Morning View in 2001 cemented commercial positioning, particularly through the single Drive, which received heavy MTV rotation. Light Grenades in 2006 hit number one domestically and earned gold status, demonstrating sustained commercial strength across the 2000s.
