The band formed in Las Vegas in 2008 around Dan Reynolds' vocals and synth-forward production. Their 2012 debut Night Visions introduced the formula that would dominate rock radio: "Radioactive" and "Demons" became inescapable tracks, with "Radioactive" setting a record for weeks charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached number two domestically and went platinum within months, establishing them as MTV's biggest breakout act of that cycle. Their commercial peak continued through Smoke + Mirrors (2015), which hit number one across the US, Canada, and UK, followed by Evolve (2017) with singles "Believer", "Thunder", and "Whatever It Takes" cementing their position as one of the decade's most streamed rock acts.

Their catalog shifted with Origins (2018) and the double album Mercury - Acts 1 & 2 (2022), which featured the top-five single "Enemy". Most recently, Loom (2024) arrived without longtime drummer Daniel Platzman, marking a notable lineup change. The band has moved 74 million albums worldwide with approximately 160 billion total streams, making them the first rock act to land four songs with over a billion streams each. While critical reception has remained mixed, their commercial footprint on streaming and radio remains substantial.
