John Rzeznik and Robby Takac started the band as a cover outfit under the name the Sex Maggots before settling on their true name from a True Detective magazine ad. Their early material leaned punk and metal, catching the attention of Metal Blade Records for their 1987 debut. Influences like the Replacements shaped their college radio presence by 1990, but commercial success remained elusive until A Boy Named Goo in 1995, when the acoustic track 'Name' broke through on LA radio and climbed the charts.
The band's real turning point came in 1998 when 'Iris' landed on the City of Angels soundtrack. Though never officially released as a single, the track dominated airplay for nearly a year, hitting number one for 18 weeks and earning three Grammy nominations. Dizzy Up the Girl, released that September, sold over three million copies and delivered hits like 'Slide', 'Dizzy', and 'Black Balloon'. This album cemented their shift from alternative roots to mainstream rock appeal. The Goo Goo Dolls continued releasing studio material through the 2000s and 2010s, with albums like Gutterflower, Let Love In, Something for the Rest of Us, and Boxes establishing a catalog spanning multiple eras of their sound.
