Glass Animals are an Oxford electronic/alternative rock outfit that emerged from a school friendship in 2010 and built a devoted following through intricate production and narrative-driven songwriting. The four members met at St Edward's School in Oxford, where Bayley and Drew MacFarlane bonded over shared childhoods in the U.S. before Bayley was introduced to bassist Edmund Irwin-Singer and drummer Joe Seaward. They began recording together in 2010 and released their debut EP Leaflings in 2012 on Kaya Kaya Records, an XL Recordings subsidiary. The band's breakthrough came with their 2014 debut album Zaba, which collected five singles including 'Gooey', a track that climbed to platinum certification in the U.S. and secured their position in alternative music. Extensive touring in 2015 and 2016 established them as a consistent live draw, with sold-out runs across American venues.
How to Be a Human Being arrived in 2016 as a concept album where each track told a story through fictional characters, allowing the band to explore varied musical territory. The album earned two MPG Awards and a Mercury Prize shortlist nomination. Their third album, Dreamland, released in 2020, shifted toward introspective material exploring nostalgia and memory. The album spawned 'Heat Waves', which became a global phenomenon through TikTok exposure and topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, accumulating over two billion Spotify streams by 2022. Supporting singles 'Tokyo Drifting' with Denzel Curry and 'Your Love (Déjà Vu)' reinforced the album's commercial reach, while Dreamland itself reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200. In 2022, the band received two Brit Award nominations and a Grammy nod for Best New Artist.
