As a trio featuring Wyclef Jean, Pras, and Ms. Lauryn Hill, they rejected the prevailing gangsta rap formula and became one of the most significant rap acts of their era.
About Fugees
Formed in 1990 in South Orange, New Jersey, the Fugees signed with Ruffhouse Records in 1993 and released their debut Blunted on Reality in 1994. The album drew from political hip hop, jazz and neo soul, establishing the group as artists with substantive compositional range. Their underground hits "Nappy Heads" and "Vocab" gained traction through Salaam Remi's remixes and laid groundwork for what would follow.
The Score arrived in 1996 and secured the group's place at the forefront of pop music. The album hit number one on the US Billboard 200, earned 7x Platinum certification from the RIAA, and spawned three major singles: "Ready or Not", "Fu-Gee-La", and "Killing Me Softly", the latter reaching number one in over twenty countries. The Score received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, only the second rap album ever nominated in that category. The group's 1997 performance in Haiti drew the largest attended staged concert the country had seen at that time. Despite their commercial dominance in the decade, they never delivered a successful follow-up album, disbanding officially in 2007 after years of internal friction, though reuniting briefly in 2021.
The Fugees won two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for International Group during their initial run, and remain among the best-selling hip hop groups of all time. The Score placed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list, while MTV and Billboard both ranked them among the greatest rap groups.
