Franz Ferdinand emerged from Glasgow in 2002 as one of the defining bands of the post-punk revival, crafting angular guitars and sharp rhythms that cut through the early 2000s rock landscape. Their Mercury Prize-winning debut and a string of UK top 20 singles established them as essential alternative rock, though the band has evolved significantly through lineup changes and sonic shifts.

The band formed around Alex Kapranos and Paul Thomson, who met in Glasgow and began writing together after their time in Yummy Fur. Nick McCarthy joined on guitar after returning from studying jazz bass in Germany, and Bob Hardy rounded out the original lineup on bass. Signing to Domino Recording Company in 2003, they recorded their debut album in Sweden with producer Tore Johansson. The 2004 self-titled Franz Ferdinand became their breakthrough, winning the Mercury Prize and selling over a million copies in the US alone, driven by the infectious momentum of Take Me Out and the sharp single Darts of Pleasure.
Their second album You Could Have It So Much Better reached number one in the UK in 2005, establishing them as major commercial forces alongside their critical standing. The third album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand arrived in 2009 with a pronounced shift toward dance-influenced production, departing from their earlier angular post-punk approach. A remix album called Blood followed the same year. By 2013, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action continued their studio output, and in 2015 they collaborated with Sparks to form the supergroup FFS, releasing one album and touring Europe.
The band's lineup underwent substantial changes starting in 2016 when Nick McCarthy departed, followed by new members Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot joining in 2017. Paul Thomson left in 2021 and was replaced by drummer Audrey Tait. These shifts brought the band to their fifth studio album Always Ascending in 2018, with The Human Fear arriving in 2025.
