Apple grew up between New York and Los Angeles, trained classically on piano from childhood. She began writing songs at eight years old and released her debut album Tidal in 1996 while still in her teens, earning a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance for the single Criminal. Her second album When the Pawn, produced by Jon Brion in 1999, received critical acclaim and platinum certification from the RIAA.
Her third album Extraordinary Machine took an unconventional path to release. Apple began recording in 2002 with producer Jon Brion but grew dissatisfied with the direction, eventually having the album re-produced and released in October 2005 without Brion's involvement. The album was certified gold and nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. Her fourth studio album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do arrived in 2012 to critical praise and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Apple's fifth album Fetch the Bolt Cutters, released in 2020, won two Grammy Awards including Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance for the single Shameika.
