Evanescence emerged from Little Rock in the mid-1990s as Amy Lee and Ben Moody's piano-driven rock project, building a fanbase through early demos and local shows before signing to Wind-up Records. Their 2003 debut Fallen became a massive commercial success, establishing them as a major force in the heavy alternative rock space and winning Grammy recognition.

About Evanescence
Amy Lee and Ben Moody met at a youth camp in 1994, where Moody heard Lee playing Meat Loaf on piano. They wrote their first songs together, including Solitude, Give Unto Me, Understanding, and My Immortal. After experimenting with band names like Childish Intentions and Stricken, they settled on Evanescence, drawn to the word's meaning of disappearance and fading away. Lee valued the name for its mystery and dark resonance.
The band circulated early demos before their official signing, including the self-titled Evanescence EP in 1998 (roughly 100 copies), the Sound Asleep/Whisper EP in 1999 (about 50 copies), and the Origin demo CD in 2000 (2,500 copies). Lee has clarified in interviews that Origin was never intended as a proper album but rather a collection of rough demos recorded in Moody's apartment and her parents' attic using a $300 8-track recorder, sent to labels as a shopping tool. Songs like My Immortal appear in demo form on Origin, later refined for official releases. Fallen arrived in March 2003 to international success, reaching 6x platinum in the US and selling over 15 million copies worldwide. Moody departed in October 2003 shortly after the band's Grammy wins for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance for Bring Me to Life. Terry Balsamo from Cold replaced him, and the remaining session members became permanent fixtures. The band continued releasing material through lineup changes, including the live album Anywhere But Home in 2004 and studio records The Open Door in 2006 and their self-titled 2011 album.
