About Erykah Badu

Born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas in 1971, Badu started performing early and studied theater at Grambling State University before committing fully to music. Her breakthrough came after opening for D'Angelo in 1994, leading to a deal with Kedar Entertainment. Baduizm arrived in 1997 and immediately certified triple platinum, yielding singles like On & On, Appletree, and Next Lifetime. Her live album that same year, simply titled Live, included Tyrone and reached double platinum status, establishing her commercially and critically as the neo soul movement's focal point.

The 2000s saw Badu refine her approach across multiple albums. Mama's Gun (2000) delivered the Billboard Hot 100 number-six single Bag Lady alongside Didn't Cha Know? and Cleva, earning platinum certification. Worldwide Underground (2003) charted gold and included the number-nine hit Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop). The New Amerykah two-part series (2008 and 2010) pushed her sound further into experimental territory, with the second installment's Window Seat video drawing controversy but reinforcing her artistic independence. Beyond the studio, Badu collaborated steadily with producers and artists across hip-hop and electronic music, appearing on work with Common, The Roots, Flying Lotus, and others.

Badu's voice has drawn comparison to Billie Holiday, and her visual presence, particularly her signature large colorful headwraps, became as distinctive as her vocal delivery. She co-founded the Sugar Water Festival with Queen Latifah and Jill Scott and has maintained an active touring schedule including annual birthday concerts. Recent years brought collaborations with D'Angelo, Teyana Taylor, and international artists like RM.
