Clapton's foundation came through playing in the Yardbirds and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers before co-founding Cream in 1966, where he pioneered sustained blues improvisation within psychedelic arrangements. That three-piece dissolved in 1968, followed by the short-lived Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos, the latter producing one of his most enduring songs in Layla. His solo career launched in earnest in 1970 and quickly established him as a major force across multiple idioms, from the country-tinged Slowhand in 1977 to the pop-rock of August in 1986.
Clapton's work has consistently found mainstream audiences while retaining blues credibility. His 1974 cover of Bob Marley's I Shot the Sheriff brought reggae into the rock mainstream, while later crossover hits like Change the World in 1996 and My Father's Eyes in 1998 demonstrated his range. The Unplugged album emerged from personal grief following the death of his son in 1991, containing the acoustic meditation Tears in Heaven. Since 1999 he has focused increasingly on traditional blues and blues rock recording, while hosting the Crossroads Guitar Festival, which has become a significant gathering for blues musicians.
Clapton holds the unusual distinction of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: as a solo artist, as a member of Cream, and as a member of the Yardbirds. He has won 18 Grammy Awards and sold more than 280 million records worldwide.
