Mathers released Infinite independently in 1996 before the Slim Shady EP caught underground attention in 1997. His 1999 major-label debut The Slim Shady LP, produced primarily by Dr. Dre, established his commercial foothold with tracks that balanced shock value against genuine technical rap skills. The Marshall Mathers LP followed in 2000 and The Eminem Show in 2002, each moving over one million copies in their first week domestically. These albums anchored his commercial dominance through the early 2000s, though his work frequently drew criticism for transgressive content exploring lower-income American anxiety, political anger, and personal trauma.

After Encore in 2004, Mathers stepped back due to prescription drug addiction, returning with Relapse and the commercially massive Recovery in 2010. His subsequent albums maintained chart dominance across The Marshall Mathers LP 2, Revival, Kamikaze, Music to Be Murdered By, and The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) in 2024. Beyond music, Mathers co-founded Shady Records, appeared in the 2002 film 8 Mile, and launched the Sirius XM channel Shade 45. His cultural reach extends to the restaurant Mom's Spaghetti and collaborations across hip-hop's landscape, from his D12 group work to production partnerships.
