Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien in West Hampstead, Springfield cut her teeth in the folk-pop group the Springfields with her brother Tom and Tim Feild between 1960 and 1963, scoring UK Top 5 hits with "Island of Dreams" and "Say I Won't Be There". Her 1963 solo debut "I Only Want to Be with You" established her as a solo force, leading to six transatlantic Top 40 hits in the decade. She navigated divergent chart success on either side of the Atlantic, with UK-only hits like "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" and Burt Bacharach covers alongside American-only successes like "The Look of Love".
Dusty in Memphis, released in 1969, stands as her most consequential work. The album earned Library of Congress preservation status in 2020 for its cultural and aesthetic significance. The 1971-1986 period saw reduced commercial output, but a 1987 collaboration with Pet Shop Boys on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" returned her to the charts at No. 2 on both UK and US singles charts, followed by "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private". She accumulated 25 UK Top 40 hits and earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the UK Music Hall of Fame.
